St. Patrick’s Grave, Tribes of Galway and Boating

Céad míle fáilte, welcome to your Letter from Ireland “Shorts”.  Each Tuesday we’ll bring you a quick-read of some of our favourite and interesting Irish things for this week.

FAVOURITE PLACES IN IRELAND
Down Cathedral, Downpatrick, County Down.

Down Cathedral strikes an imposing figure up on the hill but there is something much smaller to be found in the grounds outside that is really interesting. Click here to see a video where we tell more.

If you’re a Plus member you can view our Homelands feature from County Down here.

FEATURED IRISH SURNAMES – The Tribes of Galway.

This week we’re going to look at the surnames of “The Tribes of Galway”. Click here to see if your surname is one of these “tribal” surnames.

Do any of your Irish family names come from the Tribes of Galway?

BOOK I’M READING NOW

“Irish Folktales” by Henry Glassie. This is a great suggestion from one of our readers. Here’s what they had to say about the book: “He collected hundreds of folktales and stories, all written just like they are recited in the oral tradition and it’s been a wonderful way for me to learn more about Ireland and the heart behind the people.” Click here to see the book on amazon.

IRISH WORD OR PROVERB

Is maith an t-anlann an t-ocras

Which translates literally to “Hunger is a great sauce”.

IRISH CRAFT/PRODUCT WE LOVE

Dubarry of Ireland* are well known in Ireland for their boat shoes, known as “dubes”. They have been located in Ballinasloe, County Galway, since the 1930’s and going strong ever since. They now craft all sorts of high quality outdoor country wear. These are the classic boat shoes but I know Carina would love to get her hands on a pair of those “Glanmire” country boots.
